Scott’s NFL Mock: 7/2
Where will Russell Okung go? Is he good enough to be the #1 overall pick? Or does QB Sam Bradford become the consensus #1? Check out the mock to see.
This is the first of many mock drafts by WestSportsReport.com’s mock draft analyst in Scott Carasik.
Scott will update this mock regularly, and as the NFL season gets closer, he will update it more often.
Check back later next week as Scott and I do a joint mock draft. Also, don’t forget to check out the debate between who is the best QB prospect.
1. Kansas City Chiefs: OLB Sergio Kindle, Texas
The #1 overall pick in my mind needs to only go one of two ways otherwise it’s a waste, and that’s QB and LT. But the Chiefs actually have a solid QB and left tackle in Cassell and Albert, so I’m going to go with what I feel is the 3rd most important spot on any team, the Linebacker who will lead the defense, and in the 3-4 it’s the Rushbacker. It may be a bit high for , but I see him rising and his pass rushing and leadership make him a top player in the draft, and since the Chiefs don’t need a QB or LT, it’s the next most logical pick for KC.
2. Cleveland Browns: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma:
Bradford is the best QB in the draft. And Cleveland isn’t looking like they trust either Anderson or Quinn in the Mangini era. I fully expect them to take the top QB if they fall this far and that’s easily Sam Bradford.
3. Detroit Lions: Russel Okung, OT, Oklahoma State:
Detroit completely neglected the LT spot last time out. Stafford will get banged up and bruised in 2009, so they will see that he needs some protection. Okung and Cherilus should create a solid pair of bookend OT’s for the Lions.
4. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver): S Taylor Mays, USC
I’m not buying the Eric Berry hype. Mays is the top Safety in the draft and Seattle needs a safety. I think it will give them a great leader and a horribly scary hitter at SS. Mays will be the next Sean Taylor, and that’s more than worth the #4 overall pick.
5. Oakland Raiders: DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida
Their DE’s are terrible, and their only good one is a FA after the 2009 season. Dunlap is the best pure 4-3 DE in the draft and I think they will take him and give the defense a good DE to anchor against the run and the pass. Dunlap compares to Mario Williams and Julius Peppers as a 6’6” 290 pound beast and should have a good season again as a junior at UF.
6.Tampa Bay Buccaneers: WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois
Antonio Bryant is on a franchise tag, and Michael Clayton isn’t all that special. As much as I would hate to see this pick, Benn makes the most sense and makes that offense scary. They also need some better DT’s for their scheme but in such a deep DT draft, I think they can wait.
7. St. Louis Rams: DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska
The best DT in the draft goes to a team that values both strength and speed in their picks. Suh is a perfect fit for the NT spot in the 4-3 that Spagnuolo runs and should help Carriker get better penetration on the inside of that defense.
8. Buffalo Bills: S Eric Berry, Tennessee
With only Donte Whitner and Jairus Byrd under contract for 2010, and Whitner’s contract running up after that, they need a S. They get the 2nd best safety in the draft in Eric Berry. Berry will be the FS for the Bills and will allow Whitner to play his more natural SS spot.
9.San Francisco 49ers: NT Terrence Cody, Alabama
I could see this pick being a QB if they decide Smith or Hill aren’t good fits, but I also have a feeling they will just wait until later for the QB. They need the big clogger in the middle of their defense and that’s Terrence Cody to a T. There are very few guys in his mold and he is easily the best 3-4 NT in the draft at 6’5” 365. He will free up the center of the defense for Willis and McKillop.
10. Washington Redskins: CB Trevard Lindley, Kentucky
I could see them going many ways with who has expiring contracts. CB, OLB, RT, and even QB are options. I went with a CB due to the fact that they have a solid LT, and I think they are re-signing Campbell at QB. Lindley is the best CB in the draft and would fit their scheme very well at RCB across from Hall.
11. Tennessee Titans: QB Tim Tebow, Florida
I don’t see Collins or Young starting in Tennessee past 2010. I think Young gets traded away this season and I think Collins only has 1 year left in the tank. I see Collins starting in 2010, and then Tebow taking over in 2011 as the starting QB for the Titans, doing what they should have done with Young in the first place in letting him sit out a full year to learn the pro style and offense.
12. NY Jets: WR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State
The #2 WR in the draft goes to a team that needs a good compliment to their #1, Jerricho Cotchery. Bryant should give them a combo that is reminiscent of Boldin and Fitzgerald in Arizona, and should also give them a really good overall offense that will allow them to challenge teams as much in the air as they do on the ground.
13. Miami Dolphins: RB Jonathan Dwyer, Georgia Tech
With both Brown and Williams contracts expiring at the end of the year, they will need a RB. Dwyer is a pounding RB who can carry a load similar to Michael Turner in 2008 and will be the guy to carry the load in Miami in 2010.
14. Green Bay Packers: OLB George Selvie, South Florida
Of the teams who switched to the 3-4 in 2009, the Packers will have the best transition with solid lines and linebackers. The only problem with this is that Kampmann’s contract runs out at the end of the year, and I just don’t see him staying. Selvie is a guy who I see skyrocketing up the boards for the 3-4 teams with his pass rushing skill set and should be a really good fit for the Capers pincer movement 3-4.
15. Cincinnati Bengals: RB C.J. Spiller, Clemson
Cedric Benson is a starting RB in the NFL? No thanks. Give me Spiller here as a starter for Cincinatti and the BPA on the board.
16. Dallas Cowboys: DE Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma
As much as a 3-4 NT would make sense for them, I think they feel Ratliff is a good fit there. McCoy is a great fit for the DE spot in the 3-4 with his quickness and should give them a guy who can penetrate the way Wade Phillips wants his DL to do.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars: WR Damian Williams, USC
The Jags have aging Torry Holt, and then no one at WR. Williams is a good fit for them and should allow them to have someone other than Torry Holt or Marcedes Lewis in the passing game in 2010.
18. New Orleans Saints: LB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma
The Saints and horrible defense are kind of synonymous. They have some good DL now, and some better DB’s but their LB’s outside of John Vilma are still somewhat atrocious. Lewis will stop their LB corps from getting a D from now on and give them a solid B with a good WLB and good MLB.
19. Denver Broncos (via Chicago): ILB Brandon Spikes, Florida
They need that TED to lead them. With D.J. Williams at the Mike, and Spikes at the Ted, they will have 2 very good, fast, and strong LB’s. Add in Dumervil in a role similar to Merriman’s in SD, and you have a solid 3-4 LB corps.
20. Minnesota Vikings: CB Joe Haden, Florida
Antoine Winfield and who else at CB for Minnesota? Now, it’s Joe Haden and Antoine Winfield, this should be a good pairing for the Vikings at CB.
21. Arizona Cardinals: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma:
For the offense that has everything but a good TE, we give them a good TE. Gresham is easily one of the best TE’s in college football and will be a great target for the QB in AZ whether it is the ancient Kurt Warner or the playboy Matt Lienart.
22. San Francisco 49ers: QB Jevan Sneed, Ole Miss
The 3rd best QB and last 1st round caliber QB in this draft, but is the best pick for the 49ers. With Cody and Snead this team will get 2 more cornerstones to add to its team. Snead can make all the reads, and can lead a team to victory.
23.Seattle Seahawks: CB Javier Arenas, Alabama
Their secondary was weak, now it should be a strong suit. With Mays, Arenas and Jennings, they should have ¾ starters set. Babineaux could easily be the last starter.
24. Houston Texans: WR Brandon LaFell, LSU
Kevin Walter is a FA after this year and I think the Texans would love to give Andre Johnson a better #2 to take some pressure off of him. LaFell is a great college WR and should be a better deep option than Walter to help take the pressure off.
25. Atlanta Falcons: LB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
Atlanta has few needs, but it’s main need is OLB. Peterson isn’t getting any younger or faster, and the need for a young WLB to help Lofton and Nicholas out will be filed with Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon is a smart player and a fast one, two things that Dimitroff and Smith love to find.
26. Indianapolis Colts: CB Ras-I Dowling, Virginia
They are losing a few of their CB’s to FA, and Dowling is a great fit for the Cover 2 scheme they will continue to run in Indianapolis. I was tempted to go with a DT here, but with them spending 2 picks in the 2009 draft on DT’s, I strayed away from that.
27. Philadelphia Eagles: S Reshad Jones, Georgia
Sean Jones only signed a 1 year deal and Reshad Jones can play either FS or SS, giving them the versatility to have R. Jones at FS and Mikell stay at SS. Jones is a hard hitter and a solid cover man and should be a big help to the Eagles secondary that would look for its new Dawkins.
28. Baltimore Ravens: WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame
With only 1 WR under contract for 2010, they need a WR in the worst way. Tate is a great fit at WR for a guy like Flacco with his deep speed.
29. San Diego Chargers: OT Brian Bulaga, Iowa
A weak OT class, with little NFL need at OT, gives Bulaga a contender to play on. This should be a great fit at RT for the Chargers should they re-sign McNeill.
30. NY Giants: S Earl Thomas, Texas
I don’t think C.C. Brown is good enough, even if he re-signs to be a starter in the Giants scheme. Thomas makes too much sense here.
31. New England Patriots: DE Vince Oghobaase, Duke
They could possibly lose Seymour to FA, and in true Patriot style, take a Seymour clone to replace him in Oghobaase. He is a 6’6” 310 pound monster in the Seymour-Stroud model and should command the double teams Belichick wants his DT’s to command.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: OT Trent Williams, Oklahoma
I still believe LT is a need for the reigning champions. Williams is the 3rd best OT in a somewhat weak OT class, but should be a great fit for the Steelers with his attitude and nastiness.

Thanks for viewing my mock and I will respond to all comments left here!
I agree Wr but i think Dez Bryant is going before 32 after the Jets win the Super Bowl.
Ok where do I start with the differences of opinion…… I don’t think the Browns will draft a QB with the $ invested in the two they have….I don’t see how drafting another running QB with “coachable mechanics flaws” in Tennessee makes sense….GB just drafted an OLB Clay Matthews and are moving Kampman into the other side they need a power RB to spell Grant….Gerald McCoy will not fall that far….AND furthermore Colt McCoy doesn’t get drafted in the first round at all?… Snead is good and Tebow is one of the best athletes in the game. I don’t know why but I hate Bradfords lil girl face and taking 30 seconds to devise every play. Colt McCoy is my #2 QB in the draft…come on I need a lil love for Texas, HOOK EM!
PS Clint the Jets will win the big show when Namath himself comes back with Favre to the Vikes……PUNK!
I agree where is Colt Mccoy? But come on I wrote this before I knew that Calvin Pace was suspended for four games. Maybe I had a little to drink. But right now all teams are 0-0 and I have faith in the defense to come around. J E T S
In all fairness about Gerald McCoy dropping…no one thought Crabtree would fall to 10. No one thought Orakpo would fall to 13. You really have no idea how this season plays out.
Colt McCoy is only going to get picked by a few teams. He doesn’t have the arm strength to play in any system like Snead can. I truly think that McDumbshit will draft McCoy…whether its in the first or the 2nd.
McCoy is not good enough to be a first round QB. You wanna talk about bad mechanics, look at him.
GB pick is assuming Kampmann doesn’t resign after his contract expires.
It’s too early to say for sure what the needs are. I was basing this off of team needs and contract situations.
I like Seattle’s first position, and I agree with drafting Mays or Berry (either would be a great improvement) if Okung is off the board at that point. However, I disagree with the second pick though in that the Hawks will want to address the future of the OL here since Jones will be retiring shortly, which I why I believe that Bulaga is a better pick there.
Also, with regard to Sneed(whom I hope falls to Seattle), Jackson just isn’t going to get the job done for the Vikings(just ask TJ Housh who was less than impressed during the FA period), so with an offense that includes Peterson and Harvin, why not go with a QB there?
Anyhoo, great job once again and I look forward to the next mock.
Thanks K.D.!
I do agree that Travaris sucks but I think that the Vikings will bring in someone like Chad Pennington and then take a flyer in the 2nd on someone like Colt McCoy or Jimmy Clausen.
Thanks for the reply.
I still highly disagree with your Vikings pick. We can probably agree that Peterson (and Hutch) is the heart of the offense, and Vikings fans should be thankful that Farve will be there to yell at Harvin for one year. After that, they have nothing. I don’t think that the fans will put up with it. I firmly believe that the Vikes have to go QB there, and if the second best QB is available there…..you have to go for him.
Also, I do want to ask a general question about interior offensive linemen. Do you see any OG or C entering the first round?
I think O’Dowd has the best possibility for it. outside of him, I don’t see the first round talent there. There is need, but I think we see the best OG’s and C’s come off in early 2nd.
