Scott’s 2010 Mock – 11/18/2009
With this installment I stick with the same draft order I’ve been using of the ACTUAL order. So please, if you have any complaints on the order, take it up with your team for not being “good” enough to have a lower pick. That being said, my mock:
1st Round
1) Cleveland Browns – QB Jimmy Clausen – Notre Dame
The Browns are in dire need of a starting QB among other things. Clausen is a bright 3 year starter in a pro scheme and more than deserves to be the top pick with his mind and his arm. Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn just can’t get it done in the NFL, and I think one if not both will be either traded or cut this coming offseason.
2) St. Louis Rams – QB Jake Locker – Washington
The Rams QB’s are Kyle Boller and Mark Bulger, neither of which have been good since 2004. They need one as well and Spags goes offense with his 2nd straight #2 overall pick in the QB from Washington, Jake Locker. Locker has size, speed, and an arm, and seems to have the intangibles to be a good QB in the NFL.
3) Detroit Lions – NT Ndamukong Suh – Nebraska
The Lions are relying on Grady Jackson to be their NT in a defense that requires the NT to actually be able to plug holes and play 3 downs. Jackson is just a stop gap and Suh will be their new clogger in the middle with Jackson spelling him. Suh is an absolute monster in the middle of a defense and will give Larry Foote some much needed protection from blockers.
4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DT Gerald McCoy – Oklahoma
Tampa needs a true UT for it’s scheme and McCoy is jsut that. He reminds me quite a bit of the Falcons Jonathan Babineaux or the Vikings Kevin Williams, 2 guys who do exactly what a 3-tech is supposed to do. Control the Point of Attack, penetrate the offensive line, and disrupt the plays as they go along. The Buccs need a guy who can help them out in that regard.
5) Kansas City Chiefs – OT Russell Okung – Oklahoma State
Kansas City coaches don’t see Braden Albert as a LT, and to be quite honest with you, neither do I. Okung will give the Chiefs a true LT and a guy who will allow Albert to play his more natural OG spot and give the Chiefs a better overall pass blocking OL.
6) Oakland Raiders – QB Sam Bradford – Oklahoma
Undead Al strikes again. He will take the injury prone QB and laugh his way to the bank for once. Bradford can make all the throws and should do well with the speedy WR’s that Oakland has.

Will Tim Tebow suffer a better fate under Knapp's tutelage than Vick did?
7) Seattle Seahawks – QB Tim Tebow – Florida
Tebow doesn’t fit your traditional WCO QB mold. He does however resemble a younger Steve Young, in that he needs time to learn how to play under center in a pro style offense before he takes the reigns. With Matt Hasselbeck winding down his career over the next 2-3 years he should be able to become the great QB we all know that he can be in the NFL.
8 ) Washington Redskins – FS Eric Berry – Tennessee
Washington’s defense isn’t what it could be. They are sorely missing a good FS since Taylor has gone. Landry is a SS and Horton while a solid playmaker isn’t as good as Landry. Berry would be a good FS for them to have and would allow them a lot of versatility on their defense for the first time since Taylor’s death.
9) Buffalo Bills - OT Bruce Campbell – Maryland
They improved their interior OL last draft, this one they take the big tackle out of Maryland to lock down the LT spot and help out the rest of the line by causing the need for less double teams.
10) Tennessee Titans – CB Joe Haden – Florida
While Finnegan has been playing well this year, Harper could use some help. Joe Haden will come in right away and compete for hte starting spot at RCB and is a guy who in the future will make a great #1 CB.
11) San Francisco 49ers - S Taylor Mays – Southern Cal
San Fran needs a true SS and Taylor Mays fits the bill almost prototypically. A guy that reminds me a lot of Polamalu, he could really give the 49ers a boost in the secondary and allow for almost a complete scheme change to a more Pittsburgh-esque blitzing defense.
12) Denver Broncos (from Chicago) – DE Carlos Dunlap – Florida
The Broncos defense is doing much better than expected, but they still need a guy who can play the 5-tech in the 3-4. Dunlap reminds me a lot of Atlanta’s Jamaal Anderson, who many believe should have been drafted by a 3-4 team because he would have been able to lock down the 5-tech very well while still getting pressure.

Will Lindley be able to replace Lito Sheppard?
13) New York Jets - CB Trevard Lindley – Kentucky
With Lito Sheppard in the finally year of his contract, Sheppard could part for greener pastures, and in turn create a need for a RCB. Lindley would ift the role very well and could really help the Jets pass defense.
14) San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina) – WR Dez Bryant – Oklahoma State
San Fran took a WR last year in Crabtree, but they also need a #2 WR because Josh Morgan is a joke and Isaac Bruce isn’t a solid WR anymore. Dez Bryant is a good WR who might have a small character issue, but looks like he will cause a much better situation than Crabtree did.
15) Green Bay Packers – OT Jason Fox – Miami
Green Bay is in huge need for a LT who can actually pass block and isn’t injured. Fox is one of the few LT’s that actually can pass block in this years draft. Fox is one of those guys that can make an offense look that much better.
16) Jacksonville Jaguars – DE Derrick Morgan – Georgia Tech
Jacksonville is in need of a good all around LE. Morgan is one of those guys that can lock down the left side of the defense as well as get to the QB form the LE spot. Something that is a rarity in today’s NFL.
17) Philadelphia Eagles – LB Sean Weatherspoon – Southern Miss
The Eagles have a bunch of injuries in their weak LB corps. Sean Weatherspoon is easily the best OLB in the entire draft and should help out a unit with his all around play and leadership.
18) Atlanta Falcons - LB Brandon Spikes – Florida
Spikes is a LB who is just dominant at the college level and could make a switch to any of the 4-3 LB spots or the WILB spot in the 3-4. Atlanta is in need of a better fit for the SLB spot than Stephen Nicholas is. Spikes has the coverage, blitzing and run stuffing capabilities to really lock down the strong side and help out a Falcons team that struggles against the run and is horrible against the pass.
Can Terrence Cody lift the pressure off the rest of the DL?
19) Houston Texans – NT Terrence Cody – Alabama
While Williams, Okoye and Smith all look very promising on the DL, they could really use a NT who could draw double teams and allow for Ryans and Cushing to roam even more free. Cody is a true plugger in the middle and will cause a lot of problems for opposing offensive lines.
20) Baltimore Ravens – WR Damian Williams – Southern Cal
Baltimore’s WR situation is futile at best. They have an aging Derrick Mason, a mediocre M-Clayton twin and a few other scrubs. Williams will be a good fit for Flacco’s huge arm and should be a good addition to a team that needs someone to take receptions from their starting RB Ray Rice.
21) New York Giants - LB Rolando McClain – Alabama
Antonio Pierce is a waste of time in today’s NFL. He is a mediocre MLB and needs to be replaced. Rolando McClain is a beast and a half at the MLB spot for Alabama and should be a great fit for the Giants’ 4-3 defense.
22) Miami Dolphins – WR Brandon LaFell – Louisiana State
Miami’s WR situation needs work with the platoon of Ginn, Bess and Camarillo. They could use a better WR in LaFell who fits the whole #1 WR thing they really need.
23) Arizona Cardinals – OLB Eric Norwood – South Carolina
AZ has 2 aging players at their WOLB spot in Berry and Okeafor. Norwood is a nasty player and would be a great addition to the defense that already has Dansby and Dockett.

Spiller should create a good change of pace for Tomlinson
24) San Diego Chargers – RB C.J. Spiller – Clemson
Darren Sproles is in the last year of his contract and Tomlinson is only a solid RB at this point in his career. Spiller is an amazing all around player and would be a nice addition to take some pressure off of Tomlinson.
25) Pittsburgh Steelers – DE Brandon Graham – Michigan
Aaron Smith and Brett Kiesel are both on the end of their careers. Brandon Graham is one of the best 3-4 DE’s in college football right now.
26) Dallas Cowboys – FS Morgan Burnett – Georgia Tech
Sensabaugh and Hamlin are both having troubles. Burnett is a top S in the ACC and should be a great fit for the Cowboys at their FS spot. Sensabaugh should be re-signed, but if he isn’t then Hamlin will make a much better SS than FS.
27) Seattle Seahawks (from Denver) – OT Charles Brown – Southern Cal
Seattle will need a true LT to help pass protect for it’s new QB in Tebow and it’s old one in Hasselbeck. Brown has the speed and footwork to be a great pass blocker in the NFL and with the zone scheme that Knapp runs he should be even better in the run game.
28) New England Patriots – OLB George Selvie – South Florida
The Patriots need a new pass rusher and get a good one in Selvie. Selvie would have been a 1st rounder last year and there is no reason for the decline that he took.
29) Cincinnati Bengals – RB Jahvid Best – California
Benson is having a great season, no doubt about it. But Cincy is also proving that they need someone to share the load with him. Best is the only one who will be drafted in the first 2 rounds who can fit the role of 3rd down back and would be able to be a great fit for the Bengals.
30) Minnesota Vikings - CB Patrick Robinson – Florida State
They have Winfield, but Griffin could use some competition. Robinson is one of the best CB’s in the ACC and will be a great fit for the Vikings cover 2 defense.

Travis Lewis should help the Saints defense get even better.
31) New Orleans Saints - LB Travis Lewis – Oklahoma
The Saints need a new WLB since Shanle isn’t that good of one. Travis Lewis is a great fit for Gregg Williams heavy blitzing 4-3 Defense.
32) Indianapolis Colts - CB Ras-I Dowling – Virginia
Indy needs someone to replace Marlin Jackson and take the best Zone Corner in the draft here in Ras-I Dowling.
2nd Round
1) Cleveland Browns – RB Jonathan Dwyer – Georgia Tech
2) St. Louis Rams – CB Perrish Cox – Oklahoma State
3) Detroit Lions – DE Greg Hardy – Mississippi

Will Tate be able to celebrate as much in Tampa?
4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – WR Golden Tate – Notre Dame
5) Kansas City Chiefs – OLB Sergio Kindle – Texas
6) Oakland Raiders – S Reshad Jones – Georgia
7) Seattle Seahawks – S Earl Thomas – Texas
8 ) Washington Redskins – OT Trent Williams – Oklahoma
9) Buffalo Bills – QB Colt McCoy – Texas
10) New England Patriots (from Tennessee) – CB Kyle Wilson – Boise State
11) San Francisco 49ers – QB Jevan Snead – Mississippi
12) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from Chicago) – DE Everson Griffin – Southern Cal

Jerry Hughes should be a better alternative for the Jets than Gholston
13) New York Jets – OLB Jerry Hughes – Texas Christian
14) Carolina Panthers – QB Tony Pike – Cincinnati
15) Green Bay Packers – CB Devin McCourty – Rutgers
16) New England Patriots (from Jacksonville) – WR Arrelious Benn – Illinois
17) Philadelphia Eagles – DE Ricky Sapp – Clemson
18) Kansas City Chiefs (from Atlanta) – TE Jermaine Gresham – Oklahoma
19) Houston Texans – C Kristopher O’Dowd – Southern Cal
20) Baltimore Ravens – DE Jared Odrick – Penn State

Kam Chancellor should help the Giants on defense.
21) New York Giants - S Kam Chancellor – Virginia Tech
22) Miami Dolphins – NT Dan Williams – Tennessee
23) Arizona Cardinals – OT Anthony Davis – Rutgers
24) San Diego Chargers – WR Mardy Gilyard – Cincinnati
25) Pittsburgh Steelers – OT Ciron Black – Louisiana State
26) Dallas Cowboys – LB Sean Lee – Penn State
27) Denver Broncos – CB Brandon Ghee – Wake Forest
28) New England Patriots – RB Toby Gerhart – Stanford

Micah Johnson is the final piece to Zimmer's top LB corps
29) Cincinnati Bengals – LB Micah Johnson – Kentucky
30) Minnesota Vikings – LB Justin Cole – San Jose State
31) New Orleans Saints – DT Tyson Alualu – California
32) Indianapolis Colts – DE Jermaine Cunningham – Florida

I like the Vikings first round pick in Robinson because it is clear they need an eventual replacement for Winfield or as you say push Griffin. Although I doubt they will replace Griffin after giving him a new deal which indicates to me that they like him. Paymah & Sapp can easily be replaced with Robinson. In the second round, taking Cole IMO will not happen. he is undersized and plays in a weak conference. Spielman normally gets big conference guys. I see them taking Marvin Austin, Vince Oghobaase, Cameron Heyward if he declares before this LB that MAY be OK. Also, Mike Johnson, Mike Iupati, or Adam Ulatoski are legitimate players that they can grab here because they need someone to replace Hicks and move Herrera to primary backup. I would go Robinson & Ulatoski because Ulatoski can play guard too. In the third or fourth round they can grab a DT. Of course it all depends on which free agents they lose because more than likely they will not be able to sign free agents with the probable uncapped year and their current projection.
Nice job. A couple of comments. Although you have players ranked pretty much by value, I think a lot of reaching for OTs will go on during the first round, Guys like Ciron Black, Anthony Davis and Trent Williams could all go due to extreme need.
Also, Danario Alexander will go ahead of all or almost all other WRs. Check him out. He is tearing up the big 12 and moving up the boards. His production and measurables are off the charts. He is the best WR in college football.
Hey,
Why would San Fran spend another #1 on a WR in back to back years? doesn’t make any sense. No one spends a #1 draft pick on a #2 receiver.
Gino,
Danaro Alexander is a 3rd rounder in my eyes right now. no way is he the top WR in the draft. I have 8-9 guys well ahead of him.
Mo,
Did the colts not spend 1st round picks on #2 WR’s when they took Gonzalez or Wayne? Did the Cards not spend a top 5 pick on a #2 WR in Fitzgerald? I can think of more, but many teams have spent 1st round picks on #2 WR’s.
