NFL 2010 Mock 7/11

We all know Al Davis loves our pick for his RAIDUHS! But does everyone else like it?

When you put two great minds together what are you supposed to get? Would it be bad because its like 2 odds making an even? 2 negatives making a positive? And even though everyone’s mother says that 2 wrongs don’t make a right…we all know they do.

Now that I’ve confused myself and all of you, here is what we’ve done: I have joined with WestSportsReport.com draftnik and analyst Scott Carasik in our latest mock. So combining our great minds we have came up with this unique mock. Whether or not its great, is up to you guys.

We alternated picks based on the newly released power rankings. If you don’t agree with them, shoot us an email and maybe you will make the mailbag that is getting released later in the month.

Also this is posted on our new forum for all of our readers to discuss!

Enjoy this mock, its one of the more unique mocks on the Internet.

1. Cleveland Browns: QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma: Scott

With them being the worst team in football they would need a QB. Quinn and Anderson just don’t seem to get it done in the NFL. Bradford is a complete QB, a leader and more than that is a winner. I see the Browns turning around with this pick. Their OL is basically complete with Thomas, Steinbach and Mack, and they have some good WR’s and should take a TE in the 2nd.

2. Kansas City Chiefs: WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois: Ryan

If the Chiefs are picking this high I really don’t know what Pioli will do. I’ll stick to my previous pick of Arrelious Benn here. Benn should have a huge year as the Illini will have a top offense in the Big Ten.  I don’t see them addressing any other valuable positions as they don’t really need them. Okung could be a possibility here.

3. Oakland Raiders: S Taylor Mays, USC: Scott

Undead Al thinks speed is king, and in the defensive backfield he is right. I think Mays will make a great SS to compliment the unheard of pick of Mitchell in last year’s draft. Oakland will have 2 fast, strong hard-hitters roaming the backfield.

4. Detroit Lions: OT Russel Okung, Oklahoma State: Ryan

Okung will be that LT for years to come to protect Matt Stafford. Great value here for them as Detroit needs O-line help and Okung could be the #1 pick in the draft if he has a great season. Better question is…how is Detroit doing so well drafting? Matt Millen needs to come back.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida: Scott

Jim Bates Defense needs big defensive lineman who can pass rush and play 2 gaps. Carlos Dunlap is a guy who can do all of the above and has the size and speed to make OT’s scared. with Dunlap on one side and Adams on the other, the Bucs should have a very good pass rush and should be able to stop the run well.

6. St. Louis Rams: DT Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma: Ryan

The Rams are going to be very good in the up and coming years and with Spags as the coach I definitely see them addressing defensive line with the amount of talent in this draft. With McCoy and Chris Long now on that defensive line, if the Rams can find a serviceable QB, they could be pretty dominant for years to come.

7. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver): S Eric Berry, Tennessee: Scott

The second best S in the draft goes to a team with a desperate need for a S. With Trufant, Lucas and Wilson at CB, they have some promise there, but need a S to help cover their backs. Berry is a true deep cover S, and will do great in Jim Mora’s Bend but don’t break defensive style.

8. Buffalo Bills: DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska: Ryan

I love Suh’s potential and I think the Bills will too. They will either need to address their defensive line or offensive line at this pick, and with the lack of depth at OT for now, I see them addressing the defensive side. Suh is physical and could pump some youth into that defensive line with Maybin. Could be scary good.

9. San Fransisco 49ers: NT Terrence Cody, Alabama: Scott

They need that one man to protect Willis and McKillop in the middle of the defense. Cody is a mammoth and should be the huge clogger in the middle to help their run defense. He is only a 2-down DT, but that’s not as big of a deal for a guy like Singletary, who understands that you have to stop the run and protect your MLB’s.

10. Washington Redskins: OT Brian Bulaga, Iowa: Ryan

The Redskins can go a couple of options here, but the most logical I see is taking an offensive tackle. Redskins are very inconsistent offensively and I think it has a lot to do with their line. Bulaga could play either side and could see his draft stock rise with a good season this year. I also see Tebow as possibility here as Snyder loves to take popular guys.

11. Tennessee Titans: DE Sergio Kindle, Texas: Scott

With Vanden Bosch and Kearse falling apart, and only having Ford and Hayes under contract, they need a true pass rusher. Kindle will be a great fit for them and should be an extremely good pass rusher in that defense. Kindle’s pass rushing should help take some pressure off of the DT’s.

12. NY Jets: WR Damian Williams, USC: Ryan

First wide receiver gets drafted here based on the fact that Jerricho Cotchery is the #1 in New York If Williams is mildly successful, it will help out Mark Sanchez tremendously. The Jets offensive line is very good, their run game is above average, and their defense should be underrated this year. If they can get the passing game going, they could be a pretty talented team.

13.Miami Dolphins: CB Trevard Lindley, Kentucky: Scott

Miami has Will Allen and rookie Vontae Davis at CB. I think Davis will do well, but I think Allen will be exposed this year. Lindley is the best CB in the draft and should be a higher pick than he goes here. I think having a young and good defensive backfield of Lindley and Davis at a man cover CB role, with Sean Smith and Gibril Wilson at S, they should be much improved in pass defense.

14. Green Bay Packers: CB Joe Haden, Florida: Ryan

Haden in my eyes can compete with Lindley as the best CB in the draft and he could help turn Green Bay’s defense into a very talented group. At this point the Packers would be in year 2 of the 3-4 scheme and it could make their defense very young and talented.

15. Cincinnati Bengals: RB C.J. Spiller, Clemson: Scott

I know they have Cedric Benson starting, which to me means, they badly need a RB. Spiller is a complete RB who can run in a power scheme or a ZBS. He has great vision and speed, the only problem I see with him is that he doesn’t have the power to be a goal line back. He is a guy like Chris Johnson though who will eat up yardage all day and put you in a good position, as well as be able to catch passes out of the backfield.

16. Dallas Cowboys: OT Trent Williams, Oklahoma: Ryan

The Cowboys have needs at either safety position, Offensive line, and defensive line. I think Williams here makes a lot of sense as he could play RT until Flozell’s huge contract is up. Then maybe Romo will actually have time to throw the ball.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars: WR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State: Scott

These guys are in dire need of a WR. They only have one established one in Holt, and Mike Walker is a solid option as a thought, but they need a true #1 at this point who can learn from Holt on how to be a great NFL receiver.

18. New Orleans Saints: LB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma: Ryan

The Saints did a great job addressing their porous secondary. If they can get some LB depth to add to that, they could make huge jumps on the defensive side of the ball. Barring a really bad year, Lewis should come out next year because he will be a great combine guy.

19. Denver Broncos (via Jay Cutler Trade): OLB Greg Hardy, Ole Miss: Scott

Jarvis Moss has been more than disappointing. Hardy will fit a SOLB role similar to Merriman’s in SD, and with Dumervil and Hardy coming off the OLB spots, it will be very hard for the opposing offenses to get time to pass against the Broncos.

20. Minnesota Vikings: QB Tim Tebow, Florida: Ryan

Tebow joins his former teammate in Harvin in Minnesota and it could be a huge success. The Vikings haven’t had a good quarterback since Culpepper and I’m really high on Tebow. If he can succeed, the Vikings will reach a whole new level.

21. Arizona Cardinals: LB Brandon Spikes, Florida: Scott

The Cardinals might be losing Dansby, and Spikes is a beast and a half and should go higher. AZ will be happy to take him and have him paired with Dansby if he sticks around or the new leader of that defense if Dansby decides to leave. Either way, they have a guy who can play amazingly well in their hybrid defense and be a good 4-3 MLB and 3-4 TED.

22. SF 49ers: QB Jevan Snead, Ole Miss: Ryan

Snead makes too much sense here for the Niners as he is a great value and fills a need. Call me stupid, but I don’t think Shaun Hill is the long term answer at QB. As much as Niner fans may hate the pick of QB because of flashbacks for Alex Smith, Snead isn’t a system QB or anything. He has the potential to be the best pro out of this QB class.

23. Seattle Seahawks: RB Jonathon Dwyer, Georgia Tech: Scott

After taking Eric Berry with their first pick to set their secondary, I felt they needed to go another direction with this pick. With Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett at RB, they need a true slasher for the ZBS scheme they want to run with Knapp. Dwyer is a back with great speed and vision, and should be an awesome fit for the ZBS in Seattle.

24. Houston Texans: S Reshad Jones, Georgia: Ryan

Houston would probably take Reshad Jones here because of his versatility and ability to play either safety position. The Texans have had a porous secondary for a long as I can remember and the addition of Jones makes their defense that much better.

25. Atlanta Falcons: LB Sean Witherspoon, Missouri: Scott

Not a hard pick here. Atlanta’s biggest need is easily the WLB spot. With Mike Peterson there and no one really behind him that any Atlanta fans trust, Weatherspoon is the best possible pick. He’s a guy who can play the WLB the way Mike Smith wants it played, and Peterson can be the backup at WLB and MLB for a year before his contract is up.

26. Indianapolis Colts: T Ciron Black, LSU: Ryan

Tony Ugoh is always seemingly hurt and if the Colts want to win another Super Bowl before Manning leaves they need to protect him. Ciron Black can come in and play right away and be very effective. I could also see a WR here or possibly another DT if their run defense is awful.

27. Baltimore Ravens: WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame: Scott

The Ravens WR corps is god awful. And they are all having contracts expire in 2010. Good riddance, they start fresh with the Golden domer and should have great luck with this raw athlete, who while he needs work on his route running, is one of the few pure deep threats in the draft.

28. Philadelphia Eagles: FS Earl Thomas, Texas: Ryan

Pretty easy pick here as the Eagles don’t have a lot of pressing needs, except for the safety position. If Earl Thomas declares, he must have had a pretty big year, and outside of the two studs in Berry and Mays, he is the best true FS.

29. San Diego Chargers: WR Brandon LaFell, LSU: Scott

Another team in need of a WR. At 6′3, he has the size and speed to be a good NFL WR. He will make a perfect compliment to Vincent Jackson, and allow Phillip Rivers with some another target outside of Antonio Gates, Jackson and his 2 good backs to throw to.

30. New England Patriots: LB George Selvie, USF: Ryan

Selvie would be a great fit in NE as they would address their defense once again in the draft. After seeing this roster the Pats would have one of the youngest and most talented defenses in the league. We all know the offense won’t need tweaking unless Brady isn’t completely healthy.

31. NY Giants: LB Rolando McClain, Alabama: Scott

They need a good MLB. Pierce just isn’t getting it done, and McClain is a scary dude to go up against no matter what team you are. At 6′4″ 248, he’s huge and reminds me a lot of Channing Crowder in his play as a plugging MLB, and he is a true force against the run. Something the Giants love to have at MLB.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: FS Myron Lewis, Vanderbilt: Ryan

The Steelers really don’t have a lot of needs. Maybe that is why they compete every year and don’t have very many losing seasons. I think the Steelers would go either offensive line or secondary with this pick, and even though Gresham is a sexy pick, I like them to take Myron Lewis. Lewis’ job would be easy in that scheme playing next to Polamalu.

I don’t really care to see the Giants listed as the NFC project champ over the Eagles.

No Jermaine Gresham? He is next to a consensus first rounder at TE as you will find.

I’m just wondering about your scouting of CJ Spiller. I’ve seen a lot of mocks that have him placed very high, but his running stats have been decreasing year by year(unless he breaks out), but his receiving stats have been increasing. 1,000+ total yards per year, but mixed.

Q1) This is another weak year for RBs, but what is it about scouting that places CJ so high?

Q2) Are NFL teams starting to become more conservative with regard to drafting RBs with so many fails and just a few hits?

First off let me say thx Scott for putting my man Golden Tate in this Draft!! The Ravens have needed another receiver for a while and now that it’s looking like Mason is retiring they need help there bad! But I do have a couple bones to pick…I really don’t see the Dolphins taking two Corners back to back in the first round(they took on in the 2nd in ‘09 too). They took Vontae Davis in ‘09 and regardless of his baggage he is a premier CB who should start with no problems. While I think Allen’s play will get worse since he’s 31 he has played good the last couple seasons and no doubt will be at least decent for a couple more. Even if he plays bad CB is still by no means that defences biggest problem(remember they spent an early pick on Utah’s Sean Smith too). I thought for sure they’d address the rush LB position early in the ‘09 Draft but they didnt. That means their starting OLBs are Taylor and Porter. Now Joey Porter did have 18 sacks last year but he is 32 and I look for that number to drop next year and so on till he retires(he went without a sack the last two regular season games and their playoff game againest the Ravens). If Porter is old than Taylor is ancient(35) and he consistently did nothing in Washington when he wasen’t injured. Their backup is Matt Roth who is good againest the run but isen’t effective in the pass rush. I see them having problems getting to the QB in 2009. On top of that their nose tackle Jason Ferguson turns 35 during this season. With the days of Zach Thomas long gone Ferguson is their #1 defence againest the run. With Ferguson’s play dropping I doubt their starting ILBs Channing Crowder who’s talented but injury prone and the medicroe Akin Ayodele will be enough to stop opponents running game. I think they’ll spend their 1st round pick to address their pass rush or an heir to Ferguson(I look for it to be NT Terrence Cody or OLBs Sergio Kindle or George Selvie). Also I don’t like that everyone is writing off the Browns and Brady Quinn excpecially. You said that Anderson AND Quinn have proved they don’t get it done in the NFL. When was that? I agree with you on Anderson but Quinn has only started 3 games…3 games in which he played two really good and one decent. It is far too soon to write him off and if he starts with Edwards and Robeskie at WR I think they’ll be more dangerous than ppl think.
