NBA Mock Draft 6/01
You saw my colleague’s mock draft here. Here is mine that I will update daily until the draft happens.
1. LA Clippers: Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma
I honestly woudn’t be surprised if the Clippers messed this up somehow. Rumor has it that Zach Randolph is on the trading block. If that is the case, I don’t see any reason for the Clippers to take anyone besides Griffin.
2. Memphis Grizzlies: Ricky Rubio, PG, Spain
The Grizzlies don’t have a lot of confidence in Conley and I understand why. This makes the #2 pick all the easier. I could see a legitimate trade here though because Rubio has stated that he doesn’t want to play for a small market, and that if he gets drafted by one, he will stay overseas. Maybe that threat alone will make the Clippers draft him! Hell, they only gave Baron Davis a crap load of money to suck.
3. OKC Thunder:
Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut
The Thunder get the defensive presence they have been lacking with Thabeet. He doesn’t need to work on his offense right away because they have Westbrook and Durant to take care of that.
4
. Sacramento Kings: Brandon Jennings, G, Italy
Jennings is another one of those players that skipped college to make money in Europe and struggled. I think it was the fact he was away from home and he wasn’t treated very well. Drafting a PG for the Kings is very important so Kevin Martin can go back to the #2 spot.
5. Washington Wizards: James Harden, G/F, Arizona State
The Wizards need another shooter to complement Butler and Jamison. Harden, outside of Blake Griffin, is probably the most ready NBA player. If Harden knocks down shots and takes some of the offensive load off of Arenas, the Wizards automatically become a playoff team.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves: Jrue Holliday, PG, UCLA
The T-Wolves have Sebastian Telfair at PG. That by itself should be enough of a reason to take the best PG. I don’t know if Holliday will be a very good pro, but he does fill two needs for the Wolves as he is very good defensively too.
7. Golden State Warriors: Jordan Hill, PF, Arizona
I considered DeRozan here, but the Warriors don’t need anymore offense. One thing I did notice: Corey Maggete is their #4!! If I’m the Warriors (and for the sake of this mock draft I am) I draft Jordan Hill to control rebounds and get the offense going. Kind of like a Dwight Howard type of player.
8. New York Knickerbockers: Steph Curry, G, Davidson
I honestly see the Knicks trading out of this pick to save money for The Summer of LeBron, but since I have to pick, I’ll take a guy who can play point guard and shoot the rock. This is exactly what D’antonio would want.
9. Toronto Raptors: DeMar DeRozan, G, USC
I really think DeRozan would be a nice fit with this team with his athleticism. If he can become the player he is supposed to, when Chris Bosh leaves won’t be so bad on Raptors fans.
10. Milwaukee Bucks: Eric Maynor, PG, Virginia Commonwealth
I know Flynn is a guy that Bucks’ fans would want, but when is the last time they did anything the fans wanted? I really think they would take Maynor over Flynn because of Maynor’s shot. He can create his own shot and eventually be the go to guy on this offense.
11. New Jersey Nets: DeJuan Blair, F, Pittsburgh
Blair would take pressure off of Brook Lopez and make both of them that much better. This would allow Lopez to be more of the focal point of the offense while Blair would just “eat” up the boards.
12. Charlotte Bobcats: Gerald Henderson, G, Duke
I think the Bobcats would take Henderson over Evans because he is able to knock down outside shots. And since the Bobcats have essentially two point guards and I think teams will draft Evans more for his point guard skills than his shooting skills.
13. Earl Clark, F, Louisville
I think Clark’s athleticism would be too much for the Pacers to pass on. He can knock down the 3 pointer and that will give Hibbert some room down low to operate. He is also a tough rebounder and takes care of the ball.
14. Phoenix Suns: Jonny Flynn, G, Syracuse
People say the Suns need defense, but I think they would take best available at this position. Taking Johnny Flynn here as Nash’s heir apparent would be perfect. Nash would likely get traded and that is where the Suns can get their big man or defensive players.
15. Detroit Pistons: Tyreke Evans, G, Memphis
Once John Calipari moved Evans to point guard everything clicked. Well it was a perfect fit for Evans also because he doesn’t have a consistent shot plus he is very strong with the basketball and takes care of the basketball. I think the Pistons wouldn’t pass on a talent like him.
16. Chicago Bulls: James Johnson, F/C, Wake Forest
James Johnson would be a nice fit for the Bulls as Tyrus Thomas isn’t panning out. I see Thomas more as a 6th man spark plug for the Bulls as Noah and Johnson man the front court..
17. Philadelphia 76ers: Ty Lawson, PG, UNC
I disagree with my colleague about this pick because Lawson improved so much in the tournament. Surround him with guys who run the floor well (which the Sixers do) and I think he will succeed. Lawson’s game is about getting up and down the court and if he ever develops a jump shot, he could be great.
18. Minnesota Timberwolves: Terrence Williams, F, Louisville
Williams is a very underrated player in my eyes for this team. I think he would do very well either coming off the bench and playing a point forward role, or coming off the bench and just score. This would help their depth in the back court.
19. Atlanta Hawks: B. J. Mullens, C, Ohio State
Drafting B.J. Mullens would move Horford back to his natural position of PF and he could cause havoc there. He is a very talented player and if Mullens can bulk up can be very good also. This would give the Hawks much needed front court depth.
20. Utah Jazz: Tyler Hansbrough, F, North Carolina
Hansbrough is a guy I mentioned I would love to have on my team. He is a great guy to come off the bench. He never gives up on a play and has a consistent outside shot. A perfect player for Sloan’s pick and roll offense.
21. New Orleans Hornets: DaJuan Summers, F, Georgetown
Hornets need help everywhere except PG, so Summers gives him another scoring option. James Posey can come off the bench and play defense for this team when needed. If Summers falls here, I don’t see him getting past the Hornets. Summers is young and explosive offensively, plus he plays underrated defense.
22. Dallas Mavericks: Chase Budinger, G/F, Arizona
Budinger comes in and contributes right away as Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, and Dirk Nowitski get older. Pretty much a gamble by Cuban to try and win a championship now.Budinger hits down shots with regularity and is a freak of an athlete. He could probably start on this team and become the team’s best defender.
23. Sacramento Kings: Austin Daye, G/F, Gonzaga
Daye is a good athlete who can come off the bench and provide some scoring. He has a good shot and can take some of the workload off of Kevin Martin. The best possible thing for the Kings is to take some of the load off of Kevin Martin before he is a wasted goods.
24. Portland Blazers: Jeff Teague, PG, Wake Forest
This pick ultimately comes down to best pick at the point guard position. If they can get a guy who can hold onto the ball and get the playmakers the ball, then they will be much better than they already are. Teague could do that.
25. OKC Thunder: Wayne Ellington, SG, Pittsburgh
Thunder take an off guard to fill up their starting lineup. Sefolosha isn’t the answer at the 2 spot, and I think Ellington knocking down shots would be great for the Thunder. This team could make the playoffs next year.
26. Chicago Bulls: Sam Young, G/F, Pittsburgh
The Bulls had a great finish to the year and even capped that off with the best first round series ever. They need to get another viable scoring option and Sam Young scores all the time.
27. Memphis Grizzlies: Gani Lawal, PF, Georgia Tech
Lawal is a good low post scorer and that is exactly what the Grizzlies need. They haven’t had a low post prescence since dumping Pau Gasol to the Lakers. Lawal is a little raw, but he could come off the bench until he was ready to take on a bigger role.
28. Minnesota Timberwolves: Victor Claver, PF, Int’l
This is probably a traded pick to a team like the Spurs who need youth, but if not I see an international big man like Victor Claver.Claver is almost the exact opposite of DeJuan Blair in size. He is tall and a rail. He will need to put on some weight before trying to come over here and play.
29. Los Angeles Lakers: Darren Collison, PG, UCLA
Collison leaves LA and goes to LA? It would be a nice fit for the Lakers who would a point guard to take Derek Fisher’s spot and Collison plays very good defense. Kobe would be happy with this pick because Collison comes with leadership qualities.
30. Cleveland Cavaliers: Danny Green, SG, UNC
Putting Green at SG would allow Delonte West to come off the bench at the 1 or 2. Green can consistently knock down shots and that is all LeBron is asking for.
