MLB Season Previews

Last season recap: (97-65) 1st in the AL West; After going through some tough times during the regular season with their young pitcher dying, the Angels repeated as AL West champs again. Once the postseason started, they finally got over the hump and beat the Boston Red Sox, a team that had eliminated them in many years before that. They are one of the few teams with great pitching and hitting and it showed as they were ranked in the top 10 in both categories.

How big of a loss will Lackey be?

How big of a loss will Lackey be?

Key Additions: Hideki Matsui, Joel Piniero, Fernando Rodney

Key Losses: John Lackey, Chone Figgins, Vladimir Guerrero,  Kelvim Escobar, Gary Matthews Jr.

Offense: LA is usually in the top portion of the American League when it comes to offense, but with losses of Figgins and Guerrero, I’m not sure how much this team can produce offensively. Matsui should be able to help, but who knows how much. Look for a lot of low scoring games out of the Angels this year.

Pitching: Once again, the Angels have baffled me with their offseason moves. They get rid of one of the top pitchers (Lackey) in the league and replace him with…Joel Piniero? They should still be solid in the pitching category as they usually are, but this could be a cause for concern. Once again Angels fans, expect low scoring games.

Summary: It’d be dumb to write of the Angels in the lowly AL West, but I can’t see them dominating their division like they usually do with the off-season they’ve had. They are much younger, but I want to see how consistent they are this year.

Prediction: 85-77 (2nd in AL West)

Nice write-up man. It’s gonna be weird to see them without Vladimir, and I think you’re right that it’ll be hard for them to score as much. Still, they should be good enough stay on top.
