MLB Season Previews

Last Season Recap: (87-75), 2nd in the NL East.  The Marlins are a young, exciting team on both the offensive and pitching side of the game.  Hanley Ramirez had a career year, and he’s still improving.  Their starting pitching staff of giants (3 SP 6’7” or taller) is developing.  They were good last year, but still needed a year to develop to be successful before the next fire-sale.

Coghlan just adds to the youth on this team

Key Additions: C Ronny Paulino

Key Losses: RP Matt Lindstrom,  OF Alfredo Amezaga

Batting: They were top 5 in the NL in every major offensive category in 2009, and I’m not kidding when I say these guys are young.  Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan will look to headline an offense that is only getting better with age at this point.

Pitching: The Marlins pitching is fairly erratic.  They have plenty of hard throwers and talent, the maturity and experience just needs to catch up with their 100 MPH fastballs (here’s looking at you, Leo Nunez).  It will be interesting to see if guys like Ricky Nolasco and Anibal Sanchez can keep it together behind ace Josh Johnson, and if the guys behind them can close out games in 2010.

Summary: The recurring theme for this team is: young.  Not a single starter on the depth chart has hit 30, and their best player is still only 26.  Maybe Julio Franco should come hang out with these kids in order to give them some insight on how to handle their oodles of talent.  If they get their heads on straight, the rest of the NL better look out.

Prediction: 90-72, 2nd in the NL East
